When the British came:
The British came to Australia around year 1770. At first the British used Australia as a place to have penal colonies. These colonies had prisoners that were sent from Europe. Around 1770 you did not have to do much of a crime to end up in jail. Stealing food could end with prison for quite many years. Since the British prisons were filled up, they decided to send them to Australia. The aborigines where pushed away. Quite many aborigines died because of the deceases that the British came with. Their immune system was could not handle it. Those who did not die of sickness were likely to be taken as slave. The British looked on the aborigines as uncivilized or wild animals, since they did not wear clothes, build houses or had modern weapons. The British did not care about rights and who owned the country, while the aborigines on the other side looked on nature as something everybody owned. The British gave the aborigines money and bought land, but the aborigines believed they got them for free. They did not realize they where selling away their land. When the British started building fences and chasing the aborigines away, the aborigines understood what they had done. By the time they realized it, it was too late. The British took over and pushed the aborigines further and further away. Around 1900, the British started a campaign. They took away the aborigine kids and moved them to a British family where they were raised in a properly, Christian and polite way. When these kids became adults, they were often forced to marry a man. That’s why these people have been talked about as “The stolen generation” afterwards. They had absolutely no rights.
After World War 2, the aborigines had a turning point. Their normal living standard raised dramatically, but it was not until 1967 their citizenship where equal to a normal Australian man. Still many aborigines live under racism. In 1992 an amateur video showed the police inhumane way of treating the aborigines. This video was the start of something bigger. There were protests against the system in Australia. A political group called “One nation” still insists that the aborigines must be treated different. One Nation believes that aborigines should not have the same rights as a normal white Australian.
